Tech West EcoVac vs. RAMVAC: Which Dental Vacuum Is Right for Your Practice?

When comparing a Tech West EcoVac with a RAMVAC dry vacuum, both can provide dependable suction. The bigger differences are in how they operate, what they require to maintain, and what they may cost to own over time.

At North Star Dental Services, those differences matter because we don't just sell dental vacuums—we install and service them.

Why We Like the EcoVac VFD

One of the EcoVac's biggest advantages is its Variable Frequency Drive (VFD).

Rather than running the motor at the same output all day, the EcoVac responds to demand. When fewer people are using suction, motor output can decrease. As demand increases, output increases with it.

That can mean less electricity use and less unnecessary run time at full output. In our service experience, we've also seen fewer maintenance-related issues with this type of demand-responsive operation.

No Oil. No Belts.

The EcoVac is non-lubricated and direct drive, eliminating two common maintenance items: vacuum pump oil and drive belts.

That means:

  • No routine oil changes
  • No vacuum drive belts to replace
  • Fewer regular maintenance items
  • Potentially lower maintenance costs over the life of the equipment

RAMVAC systems can have additional routine maintenance requirements depending on the specific model and generation.

What About Future Growth?

The EcoVac is also modular and stackable. If your practice grows, additional capacity can be added without replacing your original system or purchasing a separate stacking rack.

RAMVAC systems can also be expanded, but stacked configurations require an additional rack, adding cost.

For a growing practice, this can make it easier to buy for what you need now while leaving room for what you may need later.

Which Costs More?

Upfront pricing varies by model and capacity, but EcoVac is competitively priced with comparable RAMVAC systems.

We think the more useful question is what the equipment costs to own, not just what it costs to buy.

Electricity, preventive maintenance, replacement parts, service calls and downtime all contribute to the long-term cost of a vacuum system. EcoVac's VFD, non-lubricated motor, direct-drive design and expandability can all help reduce those ongoing costs.

Which Would We Choose?

For many practices purchasing a new dry vacuum, Tech West EcoVac is our preferred option.

RAMVAC has a long history in dental equipment and can be a dependable system. But when we're comparing new equipment, we like the EcoVac's combination of VFD technology, lower routine maintenance, direct-drive design and easy expansion.

The right choice still depends on your practice. Vacuum systems should be sized according to simultaneous users, not simply the number of operatories, and future growth should be considered before purchasing.

North Star Dental Services can help determine the right system and size for your practice and provide installation and ongoing service throughout Minnesota, Iowa, and Western Wisconsin.
