A-dec 511 vs. Belmont Quolis Q5500: Which Dental Chair Is Right for Your Practice?
The A-dec 511 and Belmont Quolis Q5500 are both high-quality hydraulic dental chairs built for years of clinical use. We have extensive experience working with both, and we consider both to be good equipment.
There are, however, meaningful differences in price, patient comfort, and what we've experienced servicing these chairs over time.
A Note About Our Perspective
North Star Dental Services sells new Belmont equipment and pre-owned A-dec equipment. We do not sell A-dec equipment new, but our technicians have extensive experience installing, servicing, and maintaining A-dec equipment.
We think A-dec makes good dental equipment. This comparison reflects both published product information and our technicians' real-world field experience.
Patient Comfort and Positioning
Both chairs are designed to give the clinician good access to the patient, with thin backrests, articulating headrests, and smooth hydraulic movement.
The A-dec 511 has an especially low base-down position, which can be valuable for clinician positioning and ergonomics.
From the patient side, however, our technicians find the Belmont Q5500 provides a more supportive feel. Comfort is subjective, but after working with both chairs in the field, it's a difference our team has noticed.
Reliability and Service
This is where the Belmont Q5500 has particularly impressed us.
North Star has worked with Belmont equipment since 2006, and chair-related problems have been exceptionally uncommon. Our technicians can recall only a handful of issues over those years.
In fact, we don't routinely stock Belmont chair repair parts because we need them so infrequently.
The A-dec 511 is also a durable chair with a large installed base and a long service history. One issue we have encountered several times in the field is small leaks developing in the hydraulic oil reservoir. It is generally a repairable problem and isn't a reason we would avoid an otherwise good 511, but it is something we've seen.
What About Price?
For most dental practices, price is a significant part of this decision.
When comparing similarly equipped new operatories, we generally find the Belmont Q5500 comes in at a considerably lower price point than the comparable A-dec option.
That's important because we haven't found the lower price to require sacrificing reliability. Quite the opposite: our long-term service experience with Belmont chairs has been exceptionally good.
Which Dental Chair Would We Choose?
For most practices purchasing new equipment, we recommend the Belmont Q5500.
The combination of patient comfort, exceptional reliability in our service experience, and a significantly lower new-equipment price makes it a strong value for most offices.
That doesn't make the A-dec 511 a poor choice.
A well-maintained pre-owned A-dec 511 can be an excellent purchase, particularly when it allows a practice to acquire high-quality equipment at a substantially lower investment. North Star sells pre-owned A-dec equipment and is comfortable recommending it when the age, condition, and price make sense.
So our recommendation is fairly simple:
Buying new? We generally recommend taking a serious look at the Belmont Q5500.
Buying pre-owned? A good A-dec 511 can offer excellent value.
The right chair still depends on your budget, operatory configuration, clinical workflow, and what matters most to your team.
North Star Dental Services can help you compare your options and choose equipment based on how your practice actually works.
Clear direction for your dental practice.
